Australia Day in the Macleay Valley was everything it should be — warm, welcoming and full of community spirit.
Locals gathered early at the Slim Dusty Centre to share a relaxed breakfast, catch up with friends and neighbours, and start the day together. There was a real sense of pride in the room — the kind that reminds you why living and working in the Macleay Valley is so special.
The ceremony was led by Kempsey Shire Council CEO Andrew Meddle and Mayor Kinne Ring, who both spoke with sincerity about community, connection and the shared responsibility we have in shaping the future of our region. Their words reflected what so many of us feel — that Kempsey is a place built on people who care.
This year’s Australia Day Ambassador, Liz Campbell, delivered an inspiring address that resonated deeply, reminding us of the strength found in kindness, resilience and community service. We were also honoured to have Uncle Bob Smith, Michael Kemp and Pat Conaghan in attendance, whose presence added further meaning to the day.
One of the most heartfelt moments of the morning was welcoming our newest Australian citizens. Watching individuals and families proudly take their pledge was a powerful reminder of what Australia represents — opportunity, belonging and hope. To our new citizens: we’re so glad you’re here, and we’re proud to call you part of our community.
The ceremony also recognised our Australia Day award nominees and winners — locals who quietly (and sometimes loudly!) go above and beyond for others. Whether through volunteering, leadership, sport, culture or community service, each nominee represents the very best of the Macleay Valley. Congratulations to you all — your efforts do not go unnoticed.
Australia Day in Kempsey wasn’t just about a date on the calendar. It was about connection, gratitude and celebrating the people who make this place what it is.
A truly beautiful way to start the year together. 🇦🇺
