The Macleay Valley Business Chamber held it’s August Chamber function last week on Thursday 23rd August where they recognised the contributions of local business as Awards partners and heard from Guest Speaker Elizabeth Jackson, 2018 Miss Kempsey Showgirl.
The evening brought together local business members to meet and greet and share in acknowledging some of our generous local contributors.
The evening saw Certificates of Appreciation handed to attending 2018 Macleay Valley Business Awards Sponsors.
The evenings Guest Speaker Elizabeth Jackson spoke about her journey with the Miss Showgirl Competition;
Elizabeth has lived in Kempsey most of her life. She is 22 years of age and currently study a Bachelor of Laws. Elizabeth also works full-time at NSW Fair Trading as an Engagement and Complaints Officer, working to resolve consumer complaints and provide community education as to the role of Fair Trading and the Australian Consumer Law.
Competing in the Horse Section, Elizabeth has been a supporter of the Kempsey Show for a number of years. This year Eliazbeth entered the Showgirl competition this year as a development opportunity. The competition allows young women to develop public speaking skills, and gain a further knowledge of rural industries, and rural problems. It’s also a chance to meet like minded individuals and develop networks.
Throughout her role as Showgirl in the 2018-2019 period Elizabeth will be working to become more involved in the local community. She has started fundraising for the Buy a Bale drought appeal. On 28 July 2018, Elizabeth and the other Showgirls held a bake sale and 100 Club at the Kempsey Stock and Land Annual Bull and Female Stud Sale. Together they raised a total of $1723.30. Elizabeth intends to hold more fundraising events in the future and the Show Society is currently in the early planning stages of hosting a ball and charity auction in October/November for the drought.
“Through my involvement in the community, I am hoping to promote the Kempsey Showgirl competition. The competition is often misconstrued as a beauty pagaent. As I’ve previously stated the competition is more so a development opportunity. Over the next 12 months I would like to create an interest for future participants in the competition and encourage them to also become more involved within both the show and the local community.” Elizabeth said.
